Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Workshops

Faculty affiliated with DSTC designed and developed a set of core competencies and SDOH resources available to the AIM-AHEAD community for training, research and development. The effort led by a multi-disciplinary team presents many features to support current research trends, and offers expertise in the healthcare domain; these include a series of workshops to train and educate a wide audience of scholars, researchers and analysts.

Course Description

This workshop series explores existing resources, methods, data standards, policies, models, and interventions for individual and community health improvement. It will enable varying perspectives of population health experts, policymakers and health improvement implementers to explore and analyze large integrated data related to social and behavioral health.

Course Objectives

The workshop offers introductory content as well as deep exploration of key topics as part of SDOH data including facilitated, expert stakeholder engagement. The workshop will also highlight inventive solutions to advance health equity.

Learning Objective 1:
Participants will learn current challenges, frame the problem and define hypotheses leveraging the deluge of data, methods and resources. They will also describe the importance of SDOH and enabling services data and their role in assessing, addressing, and tracking patient-level needs and interventions (clinical and non-clinical).

Learning Objective 2:

Participants will identify key resources on the available ecosystem as well as enabling services, tools, and methods to analyze, visualize, and identify health disparities and variables that correlate with different health outcomes that specifically impact underserved populations. Participants will also learn about data structures as well as the necessary infrastructure to improve health access and quality services.

Learning Objective 3:

Participants will obtain the basics of data analytics and visualization including learning why and how to clean, restructure, and prepare data for analysis. Also provided is an introduction to statistical analysis, the foundations of data visualization and techniques using Tableau as representative of leading edge Business Intelligence Software. The course features hands-on practice and interactive sessions for technical skill building.
